All of our tutors are experienced teachers at highly regarded, competitive schools, who have taught their subjects extensively and have received excellent student evaluations throughout their careers.

About:

In elementary grades, students work to master the four basic operations: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Cementing these basic math skills is foundational for building student confidence and for introducing future operations and number families. Students may use number boxes, lattice, or other newer-style methods, but in the end, a strong number sense is best achieved through lots of practice.

Topics usually covered:

Students in grade 5 should have complete mastery of addition through three digits and be able to add two digit numbers in their heads. They should also be fluent with multiplication tables through 12×12. Students often begin learning operations with negative numbers beginning in 6th or 7th grade.

Typical problem areas:

Students often struggle with mental math and with remembering algorithms for operations with large numbers, especially long division. Once negative numbers are introduced, students often struggle with remembering algorithms for adding and subtracting with integers.

How we can help you:

Hiring a math tutor early in the process, who teaches children in this age group, can help establish solid fundamentals. We currently teach elementary and middle school math at some terrific schools, and can help your child establish a solid foundation for later courses. Working one on one over our high definition video and whiteboard we can help them get off to a great start.
