Standardized Tests – SAT Subject TestTM in Chemistry

SAT Chemistry Subject TestTM

All of our tutors are experienced teachers at highly regarded, competitive schools, who have taught their subjects extensively and have received excellent student evaluations throughout their careers.

Preparation for SAT Subject Tests begins after mock exam to evaluate areas of weakness. Focus of prep includes test-specific study skills as well as a comprehensive review of subjects the student either has not learned or has struggled to grasp. Figuring out what the course has covered relative to what the test will cover is always a major goal, and we are always happy to talk with the student’s teacher to determine what if any gaps exist.

Who should take this test?

Basic/Honors chemistry students: Well, you should for starters. It is score choice, and since most colleges are impressed if you do well on a science SAT, you really have nothing to lose! This is true regardless of whether you want to major in a science or not. What is that? You are not a chemistry scholar? Well if you have a reasonably high score (B+ or above) and your course covers a sufficient breadth of the material, then you are ready for it, even if you might think otherwise.

AP® Chemistry students: You definitely should take the SAT Subject test, which will be offered around the same time as you take the AP test in May (although you might also consider the June administration if you need more prep). If you are worried that colleges won’t put much stock into a high score because you took the test after an AP course, don’t be; a high score will look good regardless of your coursework.

What subjects are most likely to appear?

You should know all of the course material but there are topics the test emphasizes more heavily. Usually these include VSEPR, electrochemistry, and atomic structure, which often are “problem areas” and can be confusing. The problem areas that are unique to you will tend to manifest themselves after a mock exam, and you and your tutor can set a course to decide how best to address them.

How can we help you?

There are test prep techniques specific to this test that we have developed and which will definitely help you if you practice them. After a mock exam we will review a series of test taking techniques with you and go over them after every practice exam. You will feel much more comfortable with the test after learning some essential techniques, reviewing the material you are maybe a little less familiar with, and taking a series of mock exams, under the guidance of one of our tutors.
